Extreme History Project: The Green Front Excavation: Digging up an 1890s Chinatown Brothel

For the 2009 field season, an excavation took place at the Green Front “Restaurant” in Virginia City. The Green Front buildings are one of the last standing known brothels in Virginia City, and located in the heart of what was once Chinatown. Since no real evidence remains of the Chinese, who made up a third of the population of the town in 1870, this excavation was able to shed some light on one of Virginia City’s most elusive ethnic groups.Free and open to the public.
