Extreme History Project Lecture Series: Archaeology on Ice in the Rocky Mountains
Unprecedented melting of ancient snow and ice patches in the Rocky Mountains is revealing an incredible array of archaeological and paleobiological materials. Ice patches in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem illustrate repeated use of these features by Native Americans for at least 10,000 years. Based on similar observations in Europe (and elsewhere) ice patches were an important element of the socio-cultural and geographic landscape of many ancient peoples. Ice patch studies provide an amazing opportunity to simultaneously know the past while engaging the public to think about the future. Free and open to the public.
Speaker: Dr. Craig Lee
