Trunks

Traveling Teaching Trunks

The Museum of the Rockies' Traveling Teaching Trunks offer exciting, object-based learning opportunities for your students. Bring a piece of the Museum to your classroom. It is the next best thing to a Museum field trip! Each trunk provides teachers and students with specimens, replicas, activities, resource materials, and a teacher's guide.

Each of the following trunks can be reserved for a rental fee of $35.00 per week (5 classroom days) plus shipping costs back to MOR or to the next school. The shipping costs listed are an approximation and can vary. Please log onto www.ups.com to calculate the exact amount of shipping costs to your location.

Trunk activities can be adapted for use with students in all grades, but have been proved to be most effective with elementary and middle school students. To reserve a trunk, call  994.5282. Trunk rental is for Montana schools only.

Archaeology Trunk
Approximate shipping cost: $35-$45

Sign up to use our trunk introducing students to archaeology. This trunk contains artifacts, models, activities, videos and resource materials. The trunk focuses on regional prehistoric and historic archeology projects.

Dinosaur Trunk
Approximate shipping cost: $50-$60

 

The Museum's Dinosaur Trunk contains real dinosaur bones, casts and molds of bones, teeth and eggs along with the latest information about dinosaurs for use in the classroom. Resource books, videos and posters are also included.

Homesteading Trunk
Approximate shipping cost: $50-$60

This trunk is designed to reinforce students' understanding of the history of homesteading and the daily lifestyles of settlers through activities and stories. Trunk materials included artifacts, models, clothing replicas and instructions for classroom-based activities.

Paper-making Trunk
Approximate shipping cost: $15-$25

Everything needed to create paper is found within this trunk; all you need is old newspaper or any other paper that is ready for the trash. Art and science lessons can be incorporated into this activity which recycles old paper into new.

Planets Trunk
Approximate shipping cost: $65-$75

This trunk is comprised of three sections.  The Solar System Section contains curriculum and activities about the Universe.  These grade specific lesson plans with activities are designed to enable you and your students to investigate the size and distance relationships between the Sun and the planets in our Solar System.  Included with these lesson plans are DVDs, books, additional activities and additional resources.  The Galaxy Exploration Section contains information, photos, and DVDs which help further your students' knowledge and understanding of the broader galaxies around us and the many explorations undertaken by NASA to study and explore them.  In the Planets Section, each Planet has its own section which contains 'Fast Facts' unique to that planet, information on exploratory crafts exploring that planet, DVDs, lithographs, activities, and additional resources.

Songbird Trunk
Approximate cost: $15-$25

This dynamic trunk has activities geared for the classroom as well as outdoors relating to songbirds. Resource materials, activities, videos, a storyboard, posters, bird song tapes, puppets, and study skins all help students learn more about the natural history of several songbirds. It is provided by the Sacajawea Chapter of the Audubon Society.

Space Odyssey Trunk
Approximate shipping cost: $95-$105

This trunk is comprised of three sections.  The Rockets Section explores the history of rockets and includes many varied activities.  Newton's Laws of Motion are examined as well as the importance of rockets in the success of all space exploration crafts and the International Space Station.  The Exploring Space Section explores several past and current space missions throughout our Solar System and beyond.  NASA cirriculum, DVDs, background information, and challenges are also included.  The Living in Space: The International Space Station Section explores the International Space Station.  Through DVDs, activities, and experiments you and your students will examine the many facets and predicaments facing humans' living in space, now and in the future.  Several activities ask students to actively consider how to make space travel and life in space more accessible in the future.

Telescope Trunk
Approximate shipping cost: $10-$20

Capture students' interest in the "Big Sky" using a Telescope Trunk from the Museum. Each trunk contains an easy-to-use 4" Edmund Astro scan telescope, star charts and activities on astronomy and the night sky.

Traditional Native American Games Trunk
Approximate shipping cost: $15-$25

This trunk was designed by International Traditional Games Society and the authentic games were hand made by Native American craftsmen.  Introduce your students to 12 traditional games such as “Run and Scream,” “Ring the Stick,” “Rock in Fist,” and many more.  This trunk is a perfect addition for health enhancement educators as well as social studies and history educators for elementary through high school.  Use this trunk to help bring Indian Education for All into your classroom.
